On February 27, 2024, Rio Hondo Community College District (“Rio Hondo”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after experiencing a ransomware attack in October 2023.
The Rio Hondo Community College data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Rio Hondo’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Rio Hondo also posted a website notice discussing the incident.
According to these sources, on October 19, 2023, Rio Hondo discovered that portions of its IT network had been encrypted during a ransomware attack. In response, Rio Hondo took steps to secure its system and then began working with third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.
