Hellenic Open University Hit by Cyberattack, 813 GB of Personal Data Leaked on Dark Web

The Hellenic Open University (EAP) has confirmed a major cybersecurity breach that occurred on October 25, 2024, resulting in the leak of 813 gigabytes of sensitive data onto the dark web. The stolen information may include personal details such as names, photographs, and IBANs, raising concerns among students and staff.

The attack, identified as a ransomware incident, exploited specific credentials to infiltrate the university’s primary IT infrastructure and backup systems. This led to the encryption of the virtual machine management system and caused widespread disruptions across secondary systems and the data network. While the university managed to recover most of its backup data after rigorous security checks, the leaked files have already surfaced online.
